It’s time to get excited. Why? Because Tegan and Sara are gearing up to drop a new album. It’s been three years since the twin sisters dropped their eighth LP Love You To Death. Today (July 9) they announced plans to roll out their ninth. Titled Hey, I’m Just Like You, it arrives September 27. And the project has a very interesting backstory tied to their forthcoming memoir High School (out September 24). “While working on our memoir, we discovered lost cassette tapes that had been unheard for over 20 years,” Tegan said in a press release. “They contained dozens of our first songs, written between the ages of 15 and 17.”
After coming across them, they decided to update the songs using the experience they’d gained over the last 20 years. That resulting music, recorded between April and May of this year, built out the tracklist for the album. “With only minor tweaks to lyrics and structure, we tried to remain true to the original essence of each song,” Sara explained. “This is the record we never could have made as teenagers, full of songs we never could have written as adults,” the sisters added. A press release lauds the work as a return to their rock and punk roots with the addition of pop production. And that really comes through in a snippet contained in an album trailer.
Not only that, but Hey, I’m Just Like You marks the duo’s first album created with an all-woman team. Check out the cover art and a trailer for the release below. You can also pre-save the LP here.
