Sam Smith Battles Heartache On “How Do You Sleep?”

Sam Smith has turned heart break into an art form. The 27-year-old handles the infinitely relatable topic with a deft hand. And his voice cuts like a knife as proven repeatedly since “Stay With Me.” He returns to familiar territory on his latest track “How Do You Sleep.” The expertly crafted anthem boasts an impressive team with Ilya Salmanzadeh handling production and co-writing alongside Max Martin, Sam and Savan Kotecha. “I’m done hating myself for feeling, I’m done crying myself awake. I’ve gotta leave and start the healing,” the crooner admits. One problem: Leaving is hard.

However, there’s a little twist. Instead of turning the guilt inward and blaming himself or escaping in the arms of a stranger, he dreams of taking up residency in his lover’s mind. “How do you sleep when you lie to me? All that shame and all that anger. I’m hoping that my love will keep you up tonight,” Sam prays as beats swell under his voice on the chorus. What follows is a graceful and exceedingly danceable breakdown. That pairs perfectly with the accompanying video. Directed by Grant Singer, it sees the “Dancing With A Stranger” superstar unleash his inner Dancing Queen with a crew in tow.

All things considered, this could very easily net him another hit. I’m also hoping it is a sign that his third album is on the horizon. The time is right, especially considering the fact that his last LP – The Thrill Of It All – turns two in November. While we wait to see, get better acquainted with his latest perfect release below.
