Ava Max captured our attention with breakout hit “Sweet But Psycho” and hasn’t let go since. She followed that up with her rousing anthem “So Am I” and then reimagined the track by linking up with K-Pop supergroup NCT 127 for a massive remix. That was enough to nab her a nomination for Best New Artist at the 2019 VMAs. With the likes of Billie Eilish, Lizzo and Lil Nas X in the running, the category is particularly stacked this year. But the 25-year-old has a solid chance at taking home the trophy. In the meantime, she’s celebrating the nomination by gracing us with two new songs: “Freaking Me Out” and “Blood, Sweat & Tears.”

Her latest gems are one better than the next and detail Ava’s unique relationship with matters of the heart. The former sees her utilizing some classic horror tropes to depict the anxiety-inducing feeling of falling. “I’m falling for you so much so that it’s freaking me out,” she admits over a vibrant pop production. Meanwhile, the latter is a breezy but equally visceral ode to giving your all to a relationship. “Yeah, I’mma give you all my blood, sweat, tears. And when it hurts I’m gonna stay right here,” she vows. “Throw my heart out on the pavement, cut it up and take it. I just wanna die with you.”

She opened up about both bops in a press release. “‘Freaking Me Out’ and ‘Blood, Sweat & Tears’ are two songs I am so excited to finally have out in the world,” Ava gushed. “The first is about realizing that you’re in love with someone to a degree that feels almost beyond your control and the second is about giving all of yourself to someone you love and sticking by their side no matter what. I can’t wait for everyone to hear and hopefully relate to these new songs.” One thing is abundantly clear after listening: I am more ready than ever for a full body of work from Ava.
