The Drop: Kat Dahlia & Kacy Hill
Your guide to New Music Friday featuring Kat Dahlia and Kacy Hill.

Arriving on a wave of hype, Kacy Hill was touted as pop’s Next Big Thing when her debut EP, Bloo, dropped via Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music in 2015. A (very good) album followed in 2017, but the 25-year-old felt suffocated and pigeonholed. “I was so eager for other people’s validations that I wasn’t even really listening to if I liked something,” she tells V magazine. “I felt like I was seeking outside opinion before I was like, ‘OK, how do I feel about it?'” As a result, Kacy asked to be released from her contract.

The “Hard To Love” hitmaker has really come into her own since going independent. 2018’s “Dinner” was a soft launch (of sorts), but “To Someone Else” is a dreamy, ’80s-evoking fever dream that showcases the full extent of Kacy’s talent. “I made an album that is exactly what I wanted to make and exactly what I wanted to say,” she says of her sophomore LP. “I’ve paid for the entire album myself. I’m doing everything independently, and I think that for me it’s like such a massive feat that I’m almost like in disbelief of it.”

Watch the striking video for “To Someone Else” below. Co-directed with Chuck Grant, the synchronized swimming-themed clip is the perfect illustration of Kacy 2.0. Welcome back.
