Ariana Grande & Social House Fail To Keep It Casual On “Boyfriend”

Ariana Grande achieved more in the last 12 months than most people do in a lifetime. The ponytailed pop princess topped both the Billboard 200 and Hot 100 twice and embarked upon a massively successful tour. And she shows no signs of slowing down. Today (August 2), the 10-time 2019 VMAs nominee joins another New Music Friday lineup. This time around, she reunites with Social House on “Boyfriend.” A bouncy and infinitely relatable ode to modern romance, it could easily be just as big as previous collabs “thank u, next” and “7 rings.”

On the track, Ari, Mikey Foster and Charles Scootie Anderson cop to conflicting feelings about a casual relationship. Basically, they want to avoid labels. However, they also desire their partner’s undivided attention. “I’m a mother fucking train wreck. I don’t want to be too much, but I don’t want to miss your touch. And you don’t seem to give a fuck,” the diva admits on the opening lines. Anyone who says they cannot relate is lying. She lays it all out on the insanely catchy chorus. “You ain’t my boyfriend, and I ain’t your girlfriend. But you don’t want me to touch nobody else. Baby, we ain’t gotta tell nobody.”

The lovelorn trio paired the track with a suitably dramatic video. Directed by Hannah Lux Davis, it sees the Ari and Mikey doing whatever it takes to make the other jealous at a party. After riling each other up, there’s some time for revenge before an epic makeup. The hitmaker opened up about what inspired the song in a tweet. “Well, i feel like this song captures a common theme in the lives of so many people i know,” she explained. “People want to feel love but don’t want to define their relationship & have trouble fully committing or trusting or allowing themselves to fully love someone. even tho they want to.”

They do a fantastic job bringing the theme to life. And I wouldn’t be surprised to see this become a very big hit. Will it be the song to end Lil Nas X’s reign on the Hot 100? Check it out below and let us know what you think.
