It’s official! After weeks of speculation, it was announced that Missy Elliott will receive the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at this year’s Video Music Awards. This makes the 48-year-old the first female rapper to be granted the honor. MTV broke the news today (August 12). They also confirmed that she would be performing during the show on August 26. In recent years, the recipient usually performs a medley of their biggest hits. With any luck Missy’s will include some new material off her forthcoming album.

“Beginning with her first-ever vid, for 1997’s “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)” — a.k.a. the one where she made blow-up trash bags chic — the singer/rapper/producer has been responsible for some of the most audacious looks, flyest choreography, and wildest visual effects seen onscreen,” MTV wrote in their official announcement. Meanwhile, the enduring hitmaker took to social media to voice her excitement about the award. “I am Humbly Grateful to be receiving the MichaelJacksonVideoVanguard Award,” she gushed.

“I Thank my FANS ‘Supafriends’ who fought diligently to see this day come.” Missy also copped to feeling very emotional about the news. “I am crying right now so thankful.” Previous winners of the prestigious honor include the likes of Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, Kanye West, Rihanna and Pink. Last year Jennifer Lopez took home the award and delivered an absolute masterclass on pop showmanship onstage. Check out Missy’s heartfelt post below.
