The Drop: Nao & Oh Wonder
Your guide to New Music Friday featuring gems from Oh Wonder and Nao.

London-based alt-pop duo Oh Wonder has amassed a loyal following thanks to two well-received albums (2015’s self-titled debut and 2017’s Ultralife) and a string of features, but they are now setting their sights higher. As their new single attests. “Somedays I don’t think my momma thinks I’m good enough to be a superstar, but one day I will show her I’m a diamond in the rough,” Josephine Vander Gucht and Anthony West declare over lush orchestration. That’s when the propulsive beats kick in.

“‘Cause there’s a crown covered in glitter and gold,” they sing. “I’m gonna wear it, whether you like it or not.” What inspired the anthem? “[It’s] a song of defiance that we wrote for anyone that has ever been told they can’t do something,” Oh Wonder explains. “As music-making teenagers, we were both discouraged by naysayers… when we met each other, we bonded over our shared experiences of setbacks and near-misses.” They used that as fuel to achieve their dreams of releasing music and touring the world.

“‘Hallelujah’ is a reminder to ourselves, as much as anyone else, to not care what people think of you, to work hard, be yourself and try your best,” Josephine and Anthony conclude. “It’s our personal anthem of self-acceptance that we hope will encourage others to ‘wear their crowns,’ no matter what anyone else says.” Watch the stunning, one-take video, which was made in collaboration with Gregory Ohrel and Supple Nam, below. It’s good to have them back.
