Sam Smith Announces They/Them As Preferred Gender Pronouns
Sam Smith has given fans an update on their gender identity. Earlier this year, the “How Do You Sleep” hitmaker came out as non-binary and genderqueer. Today (September 13), they followed that up by confirming that “they/them” are their gender pronouns in a heartfelt announcement. “After a lifetime of being at war with my gender, I’ve decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out. I’m so excited and privileged to be surrounded by people that support me in this decision but I’ve been very nervous about announcing this because I care too much about what people think,” they wrote. “But fuck it!”
“I understand there will be many mistakes and mis gendering but all I ask is you please, please try. I hope you can see me like I see myself now.” Sam added that they looked forward to being able to “eloquently” speak on the topic in the future. “For now I just want to be VISIBLE and open.” The star also tagged several individuals who helped them through the process of self-discovery including Jonathan Van Ness, Laverne Cox and organizations such as GLAAD. “These are activists and leaders of the non binary/trans community that have helped me and given me so much clarity and understanding.”
The “Dancing With A Stranger” singer signed off with a sweet and optimistic final message. “Love you all. I’m scared shitless, but feeling super free right now. Be kind.” Check out Sam’s full announcement below.
