Where has the time gone? This week marks the 15th anniversary of Ciara’s debut album Goodies. The collection dropped September 28, 2004 and served as a fitting introduction to the “Level Up” legend. Since then it has been certified 3 times platinum. Not only that, but the LP housed three Top 2 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. That includes the first of several forever-iconic Missy Elliott collaborations – “1, 2 Step.” And the automatic, supersonic, hypnotic, funky fresh diva is celebrating the historic birthday in style. How so? by reflecting on the album in an interview with Certified Classics.

“I can’t even believe it’s 15 years ago, it’s blowing my mind,” Ciara gushed. Of course, she also had a lot to say about the LP’s lead single and title track. “I had this one song, ‘Goodies,’ and I thought, ‘this is going to change my life,'” she explained. “That was my attitude and my belief in that song and true indeed, the song came out and it was the perfect way for me to start off my career.” If anything, that’s an understatement. “Goodies” claimed the top spot on the Hot 100 and held on for seven weeks. The talented 33-year-old also reflected on helping to pioneer a more bass-rattling sound in the pop market.

“I was really proud to be part of the new movement and the new sound that was really created by Lil Jon. It was having those bass heavy records, a little more hip-hop leaning, but when you mix it with the pop and R&B melodies, it created a really unique sound.” And, although she shares credit where it’s due, Ciara holds a special title, too. “I was the first girl to do it, so I was really proud of that and will be forever proud of that. I had a lot of attitude then and that attitude hasn’t left.” Check out video footage from her interview below.
