Future Hit: Tones and I's 'Dance Monkey'
The Australian newcomer has a global smash on her hands with 'Dance Monkey.'

Tones And I (otherwise known as Toni Watson to friends and family) is one of the breakout stars of 2019 courtesy of “Dance Monkey.” That absurdly catchy anthem has topped the charts in 10 countries, racked up more than 200 million streams and recently broke Kylie Minogue’s record as the longest-running number one hit by an Australian female artist (it has spent 8 weeks on top of the Aussie charts). Impressively, “Dance Monkey” is just the tip of the iceberg as the 19-year-old’s debut EP, The Kids Are Coming, proves.

Take the anthemic title track. On it, Tones And I taps in the mounting anger of millennials at the way issues like climate change are being handled. “No one seems to understand the kids these days, and why we live this way,” she hisses over a marching beat. “We got to clean up the mess you’ve made, till you don’t wanna change.” The newcomer delivers a warning on the chorus: “The kids are comin’ for you.” The powerful visual, which was directed by Alan Del Rio Ortiz, expertly brings the song’s message to life.

In it, Toni leads a youth protest — an event that is intercut with news footage of natural disasters. It’s powerful and very timely. Watch below.
