Is ‘B7’ Finally Coming? Brandy Returns With “Freedom Rings”

In the flood of last week’s New Music Friday releases, one song stood out as being extra special. R&B icon Brandy made a welcome return with “Freedom Rings.” A searing, deeply personal track that documents Brandy’s struggles in the music industry, the lead single from her (long-overdue) 7th LP is an absolute winner. “Can’t fly when the world says anger down, no joy till the camera flashed,” she belts over stomping, blues-infused production. “No smiles till the camera asked, they love it when your demons hang around.”

But ultimately, “Freedom Rings” is a triumphant anthem about perseverance. “Hearts made in winter, hopes made in spring,” Brandy sings on the gospel-informed chorus. “Trying to remember what made me sing.” The release clearly means a lot to the enduring hitmaker. “The light at the end of so many tunnels,” she wrote in a Facebook post announcing the song. “This is my undeniable truth.” Now, we just need the album. It boggles the mind to think that seven years have passed since the release of 2012’s Two Eleven.

Oh, and if that fact fills you with nostalgia, how about this? Brandy is currently celebrating the 25th anniversary of her debut album. Time really flies when you’re being iconic. Listen to “Freedom Rings” below.
