Film Review: Melanie Martinez's 'K-12'
Melanie's 'K-12' is a dazzling movie musical with one hell of a soundtrack.

Melanie Martinez’s sophomore LP took four years to complete, and not because of the musical component. Rather, the 24-year-old envisioned the album as a movie musical and made it happen through sheer force of will. She wrote, directed and starred in K-12, which debuted in theaters in early September. The film was then released on YouTube for a limited run and subsequently racked up 30 million views. Which is a mind-boggling number for a 90-minute production. Now that K-12 is no longer available to watch (for free), the alt-pop star is rolling out individual videos.

The first to arrive is “Show & Tell.” A song about privacy (or the lack thereof), this is one of the most biting cuts on K-12. “Show and tell, I’m on display for all you fuckers to see,” Melanie sings on the chorus. “Show and tell, harsh words if you don’t get a pic with me.” She conveys the dehumanizing aspect of fame in the video by presenting herself as a literal puppet. As with everything Melanie does, there’s a demented twist to keep things fresh and interesting. Watch her in action below.
