Film Review: Melanie Martinez's 'K-12'
Melanie's 'K-12' is a dazzling movie musical with one hell of a soundtrack.

Melanie Martinez’s K-12 is as one of 2019’s most dazzling pop achievements. The 24-year-old envisioned her sophomore album as a movie musical and made it happen over a four-year period. She wrote, directed and starred in K-12, which opened in theaters in September, before being released on YouTube for a limited run. (It racked up 30 million views). Now that the film is no longer available to stream for free, the alt-pop star is rolling out stand-alone videos.

The latest to arrive from K-12 is “Class Fight.” The track documents a case of girls being pitted against each other and taking the bait — instead of seeing things from each other’s perspective. “Her face was fucked up and my hands were bloody, we were in the playground things were getting muddy,” Melanie sings. “The teacher broke us up after I broke her and my one true love called me a monster.” That scene is captured — exactly — in the video, which also includes a coke-snorting teacher and demonic possession.
