EDIT: August Eve’s debut EP, Ashes, arrived today (November 19) and it was worth the four-year wait! Stream the dreamy collection at the bottom of the post.

I still remember hearing August Eve’s “Ghost” for the first time in 2015, and being immediately struck by those honey-dipped vocals. The song (and self-directed video) was perfection, and the newcomer seemed destined for very big things. But then she vanished like the supernatural entity that inspired her song. Happily, the 21-year-old returns this week with a new single called “Ashes.” A drowsy lullaby that falls somewhere between Sade and Jessie Ware, August’s latest is about the fallibility of human relationships.

“[It’s] about feeling like the people closest to you are emotionally unreachable and the expectations we have on them,” she explains. It’s a theme the LA-based singer/songwriter explores further on her upcoming debut EP, Ashes In A Vase (due November 19). “The whole concept of Ashes In A Vase alludes to this feeling and idea: the charred remains of something that once was, housed in something picturesque and marvel-worthy.” Listen to the gently unsettling “Ashes” below. If anything, that voice has only become richer with time.

August Eve’s Ashes In A Vase EP tracklist:

1. In Whose Image

2. Venus At The Mirror

3. Venus (Interlude)

4. Ashes

5. Blue

6. Outro
