Film Review: 'Honey Boy'
The Shia LaBeouf-penned 'Honey Boy' is so much more than drama therapy.

Five years have passed since the arrival of FKA Twigs’ seminal LP1, but Magdalene was worth the wait. The Brit’s sophomore LP find her processing heartbreak over haunting synths, industrial crunches and hip-hop beats. It’s a heady mix that is held together by Tahliah’s (her real name) ethereal voice and the poetry of her lyrics. There isn’t any filler on the 9-song set, but one song stands out — at least on the first listen. Co-produced by Skrillex and Benny Blanco, “Sad Day” finds the Honey Boy actress channeling Kate Bush.

“Every time you look outside your window, everything is just the same as before,” she sings over a fragile synths. “You are turning ’round and ’round, you see — it’s a sad day for sure.” That takes us to the gorgeous chorus, which wouldn’t sound out of place on Hounds Of Love or The Dreaming. “Ah,” the 31-year-old purrs. “Would you make a, make a, make a wish on my love?” The track bounces back to the here-and-now on the crunching post-chorus, but even that sounds achingly lovely. With the right roll out, “Sad Day” could be a well-deserved radio hit.
