Swedes just do pop better. If you need any more evidence to that fact, you should look no further than SHY Martin. The rising star introduced herself by penning hits for the likes of The Chainsmokers, Kygo, Ellie Goulding and Bebe Rexha. Since then, she’s stepped into the spotlight with an artist project. And she’s rapidly building out a space for herself in the crowd. Of course, it helps that every song she touches is a heartfelt masterpiece. That holds up for with “Make Us Never Happen.” Out today (November 8), it finds her surveying the destruction of a failed relationship.

And her response to the relatable subject material is a little unexpected. Instead of wishing for rekindled feelings and second chances, SHY dreams of a chance to protect her ex’s heart by erasing the relationship from existence. “I let you down. I’m that mistake, make you afraid to trust someone,” she fragilely admits. “Sometimes I wish I could go back and make us never happen. Save us from it all. If I could I would never let you down.” Cue the tears. As it turns out, the song is inspired by her experience with a previous friendship that developed into something more before eventually crumbling.

“We destroyed the precious friendship we’d once had, when all we’d really wanted was to save each other,” she told Forbes. “It’s not that we didn’t try to go back to being friends, but sometimes it just isn’t possible to go back and undo things. It took me a long time to accept that I wouldn’t get my best friend back and that I had to let him go.” That sense of loss perfectly comes through on the track. This is the sort of earnest anthem that is bound to catapult the “Same Old” hitmaker to the next level. Fall in love with “Make Us Never Happen” below.
