Love blossoms at a dog show in Katy's adorable 'Small Talk' video.

Katy Perry’s fifth album era started on such a high note with the glorious “Never Really Over” (truly one of the best pop songs of 2019). That song performed well enough, cracking the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100. Unfortunately, the subsequent singles have experienced diminishing returns. “Small Talk” stalled at number 81 in August, while the mellow “Harleys In Hawaii” still hasn’t charted. Co-written with Charlie Puth, the slinky anthem should get a boost by the arrival of a couple of remixes.

Tonight (November 12), Katy dropped a pair of club overhauls from KANDY (AKA New York-based producer Kevin Schuppel) and Chicago’s Win And Woo. They both deliver upbeat, accessible dance-pop makeovers that will no doubt appeal to fans. At this rate, the pop icon might need to rethink the direction of KP5. “Small Talk” and “Harleys In Hawaii” are both great songs, but they don’t feel very Katy. Where’s the anthemic, radio-ready of pop of “Roar” or one of the bouncy bops that littered Teenage Dream?
