The Drop: Oliver Tree & Mabel
Your guide to New Music Friday featuring gems from Oliver Tree and Mabel.

After dropping one of the best EPs of 2019 (every song on Do You Feel Me? is gold), Oliver Tree returns with the lead single from his much-anticipated debut LP, UGLY IS BEAUTIFUL. Like the brilliant “Miracle Man” and “Hurt,” “Cash Machine” finds the 26-year-old leaning into ’90s-tinged alt-rock. “Shiny like a limousine, you’re spending like a cash machine,” he begins the instantly catchy song. “Smile, show your golden teeth — that’s how you cover up your cavities.” By the time Oliver reaches the chorus, he has some questions that need to be answered.

“When is it enough? How bad do you need that stuff?” the breakout star sings over crunching guitars. “What’s it all for? Why’s it seem like you still want more?” Mr. Tree’s self-directed “Cash Machine” video further explores the themes of excess and consumerism. In it, the bowl-cut enthusiast takes his bright pink aquatic car for a spin on a lake (much to the chagrin of locals) and then indulges in a little scuba-diving with unfortunate consequences. Watch it below. UGLY IS BEAUTIFUL drops on March 27, 2020.
