Avril Lavigne Teases “It Was In Me” As Next Single Off ‘Head Above Water’

Avril Lavigne is not giving up on Head Above Water. The LP, her first in six years, is something of an underrated gem. It debuted just outside the Top 10 on the Billboard 200 and performed even better on international charts. However, all of its singles have inexplicably underperformed. Lead track “Head Above Water” peaked at number 64 on the Billboard Hot 100. Every song since has missed the chart entirely. That includes her most recent release “I Fell In Love With The Devil,” which was paired with one of her best videos. Hopefully that will change with the album’s next single “It Was In Me.”

During a lengthy interview with Zach Sang, the 34-year-old opened up about the track, which she described as “‘I’m With You’ Part 2.” “I got together with Lauren Christy. She and I had written ‘I’m With You together.’ And ‘Sk8er Boy’ and ‘Complicated’ and a bunch of other songs on the first album,” she explained. “I hadn’t worked with her since then. So she came over to my home, and we sat. We spent like a few months around the piano just talking and catching up. I was like ‘can we please write another killer ballad?’ So we wrote ‘It Was In Me.'”

The soaring anthem is definitely a highlight on the tracklist and showcases how much the hitmaker has grown between projects. Although Avril didn’t provide an official release date, it could very likely coincide with the launch of her fall tour. We’ll have to wait and see. In the meantime, revisit “It Was In Me” below and check out the rest of the interview here. Talk about a new single begins around the 32:40 mark.
