Bebe's 'Expectations': Review
Does Bebe Rexha's debut album live up to the hype? Read our review here.

Bebe Rexha is on a hot streak right now. The 28-year-old landed her biggest single to date with her county-pop hybrid “Meant To Be.” The track dominated the country charts in 2017 and climbed the Billboard Hot 100 this year. She followed that up by dropping her debut album, Expectations, to strong reviews last month. Buoyed by impressive sales numbers, it was certified gold in the US on the first day of release and debuted at number 13 on the Billboard 200. The good news continued into July. Earlier this week she scored her first nomination at the MTV VMAs. “Meant To Be” is in the running for the title of Best Collaboration. And she celebrated the achievement by announcing plans to unveil a video for her new single, “I’m A Mess.”

The emo banger could easily replicate the success of her Americana-inspired anthem. Over a soaring production the diva embraces her inner demons and offers an optimistic viewpoint. The official video brings the theme to life. Released today (July 19), it is one of her strongest to date. Inspired by her debut performance of the single and her “I’m Gonna Show You Crazy” video (where she is sent to reform school), it is an empowering moment. In it, she travels to an old-school insane asylum. There she and her fellow patients deliver some impressive choreography throughout the building. Dancing on the beds and in the stark white community space, it is a striking release with a strong message.

In the comments section Bebe opened up about how the video was inspired by her personal experiences. “I have been very vocal and honest about my ongoing struggle with anxiety and depression,” she wrote. “I wanted to create a video and song that expressed my truth. This video is a celebration of me finally being able to accept my imperfections. I’m okay with not being okay all the time. If you feel alone or lost please know you are not, and you are loved.” “I’m A Mess” is shaping up to be another big moment for the hitmaker. It has already amassed more than 26 million streams on Spotify. Hopefully the video will give it a boost so that it can make its debut on the Hot 100 in the coming weeks. Give it a view up top and revisit “Meant To Be” below!
