Ben Platt Switches It Up With 'Rain'
There's more to the breakout star than ballads as the upbeat 'Rain' proves.

Ben Platt strikes a pose for Wonderland magazine, serving blue steel in a series of chic pics. The 25-year-old also opened up about his critically acclaimed debut LP, Sing To Me Instead. “Because I come from theatre, I come from the philosophy that you only sing about things that need to be musicalized… I find it hard to write about going out or dancing in the club, that’s not quite my MO.” It’s all about emotions, and expressing feelings. “Hopefully there’s things on there that will help you process things that you’re going through.”

He has another goal for the album. “There’s a lot of horrible shit going on everywhere so hopefully it can be an escape too,” the Dear Evan Hansen actor continues. “It’s the type of album that you can fall in to and listen and escape for a little while.” As for the stripped-back sound, Ben wanted to steer away from the heavy production dominating pop music. “It’s so rare that we get an Adele or a [Sam Smith] which is very much stripped back and the storytelling is out front,” the breakout star muses.

“I feel like my strength has always been in the vocals themselves and the emotionality in the story,” Ben continues. “So I felt like the best way to show that was not to throw a bunch of stuff on that.” Read the full interview (and see more glamorous pics) here.
