Charli XCX and Troye Sivan throw it back on their nostalgic bop, “1999.” The legendary duo announced the collaboration earlier this week and instantly piqued interest by channeling The Matrix on the neon-green single cover. Since then they have expressed their adoration for one another on social media. “TROYE IS HONESTLY 1 OF MY FAV ARTISTS & I THINK WHAT HE’S DOING FOR POP MUSIC IS INCREDIBLE & SPECIAL & EXCITING. I FUCKING STANNN! LUV U TROYE,” Charli gushed. The “Bloom” crooner responded in kind. “CHARLI IS A TASTE MAKER AND WORLD CHANGER AND VISIONARY AND I LOVE HER AND AM HONOURED TO HAVE HER AS A TIME TRAVEL PARTNER.” Today (October 5), they hopped into their time machine to revisit a generally better time in history – the golden days of the ’90s.

“I just wanna go back, back to 1999. Take a ride to my old neighborhood,” the sing on the opening lines. “I just wanna go back, sing ‘hit me baby one more time.’ Wanna go back, wanna go.” Shout out to them for the glorious Britney reference (I stan pop icons with taste). That’s not all though. They peppered the cut with plenty of other nostalgic throwbacks, which makes for a genuinely fun and carefree listen. It will be interesting to see if they have any plans to promote the anthem in the near future. Based on photos, it seems safe to assume a video is on the way. But it would be even better if they could line up a televised performance or two. I for one would love to see them hop onstage for a rendition at an awards show. Just imagine the multitude of staging possibilities and the wealth of props they could use.

“1999” has been billed by some publications as Charli’s first global single since last year’s eternally relatable “Boys.” Since then she’s dropped a handful of tightly produced solo tracks (of which “No Angel” is my fav) and brilliant collabs (if you haven’t heard Tove Lo and co’s “Bitches” yet you aren’t living). Troye has kept just as busy in 2018 and is currently touring North America on The Bloom Tour.

Blow up your inflatable chair, press play on “1999” and prepare to be hit by a deluge of memories. You won’t regret it!
