Justin Bieber’s “What Do You Mean” Debuts At #1, Becomes His First Hot 100-Topping Single

First you’re up, then you’re down…and if you’re Justin Bieber, you’re really up this week.

The Canadian crooner’s new single “What Do You Mean” has not only followed “Where Are Ü Now,” his collaboration with Skrillex and Diplo, into the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, it managed to debut at #1. This marks only the 23rd time in the main singles chart’s 57-year history that a song has entered at the top. It also signals the first time Bieber has landed at the top of the Hot 100. Sorry, Lena Dunham.

JB’s previous high came when 2012 single “Boyfriend” landed at #2. “What Do You Mean” is his highest-charting single as a lead artist since the Nicki Minaj-featuring “Beauty And A Beat” peaked at #5 in 2012.

According to Billboard, “What Do You Mean” sold 337,000 downloads in its first week on sale. The song was also streamed just over 23 million times in the US alone. Additionally, since its August 30 premiere, the “What Do You Mean” music video has been watched over 40 million times on YouTube.

Bieber’s lead single from his forthcoming, yet-to-be-titled fourth studio album shows no signs of letting up, either. “What Do You Mean” topped the iTunes download chart when it was made available at the digital retailer a week and a half ago, and it’s been perched at #1 ever since.
