Katy Perry's 'Witness': Album Review
Katy Perry boldly explores club sub-genres on her banger-heavy new album.

Katy Perry’s Witness debuts at number one on the Billboard 200 — her third consecutive album to achieve the feat. Not only that, but its first-week sales tally of 180,000 equivalent album units is the biggest by a female artist in 2017. It’s a happy ending (of sorts) to a campaign that generated more than its fair share of controversy. From social media backlash to underperforming singles, the wheels were in danger of falling off at one point. However, the pop star’s innovative approach to promotion, which included the Witness World Wide livestream, really turned things around.

That extravaganza ranks as one of the better pop music marketing schemes in recent memory. Katy partnered with YouTube to document every aspect of her life over a grueling 96-hour period. It allowed the 32-year-old to shine a light on important social issues and address past mistakes. The spectacle generated over 49 million views by people from over 190 countries. She then wound it up with a concert for 1,000 fans, which was also streamed live on YouTube. It was a cute introduction to the Witness Tour, which kicks off on September 7 in Columbus, Ohio.
