Things are getting serious for Lady Gaga ahead of the October 5 premiere of A Star Is Born. Today (October 3), she ratcheted up the promotional efforts with a new photoshoot and feature for the New York Times. Posing for a trio of pictures with Marilyn Minter, the icon serves a striking look. Shot against warm backdrops and behind what appears to be a rain-soaked window, there is a more organic quality to her latest photos. They are a far cry from the glamorous pictorial she served for Vogue last month, and this is a tribute to the topic of the interview. Speaking with Rachel Syme, Mother Monster reflected on her ever-shifting career.

Since her debut, Gaga has constantly reinvented herself. This is a fact she reiterated. “I do keep transforming into a new shell of me,” she explained. However, she added that each phase of her career has been authentic. “So sure, there is an acting component to what I do, or a showbiz component to what I do. But the word ‘acting,’ it’s hard for me to talk about in that way, because ‘acting’ to me almost implies faking it.” Her starring role in A Star Is Born, previously played by the likes of Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand, offers the “I Want Your Love” siren another opportunity to change her focus before shifting once again when she launches her Las Vegas residency later this year.

The superstar provided some additional insight into what drives her. “I have a nerve inside of me to do this,” Gaga explained. “And I have no idea where it comes from, except that it might come from God. No one knows,” she added. She also opened up about Garland’s influence on her. “Judy, I just think she’s tremendous,” she said. “There’s a vulnerability behind her eyes, the way she speaks, she has big features. I just always wanted to be like her. It’s as simple as that.”

Capping off the interview with a question of what is coming next, it seems as though Gaga is already looking beyond everything else coming this year. Unsurprisingly, her plans involve yet another shift. “Oh,” she said. “I’m just shape-shifting again.” Just like that the “Shallow” singer has us hooked.
