Miley Cyrus Covers “These Boots Are Made For Walkin'” On ‘The Tonight Show’
Miley Cyrus continued her week-long engagement on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon with another pair of high-octane performances. She kicked off the week with moving renditions of Dido’s “No Freedom” and her own power ballad “The Climb” in tribute of victims of the Las Vegas shooting. She performed her Younger Now buzz track “Week Without You” on Tuesday, but last night (October 4) she moved back into the realm of cover material with Nancy Sinatra’s “These Boots Are Made For Walkin’.”
Dazzling in a red-sequined dress and thigh-high boots, Miley was supported by a live band and strummed along on a glittering guitar while roaring through the iconic anthem. Her vocals were predictably strong and effortlessly embodied the track’s rebellious themes. The “Malibu” siren dedicated the performance to Hillary Rodham Clinton, who appeared on the show to promote her book What Happened.
The pair interacted during the night’s Thank You Notes section when the teary-eyed hitmaker requested a hug after thanking Clinton for inspiring countless women. The former Secretary of State returned the favor with a thank you note of her own that contained a rallying cry echoing Miley’s Bangerz era. “We can’t stop, and we won’t stop,” she boldly proclaimed.
Miley also took the stage with host Jimmy Fallon to recreate Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers’ 1983 performance of “Islands In The Stream” at the Grammys. Dressed in a towering blond wig and flaunting a stuffed bust, she belted out the lyrics with gusto.
Although she has ostensibly been promoting Younger Now with her recent appearances, the 24-year-old has not performed much material from her latest LP. Instead, she has worked her way through her back catalog and other classics. During an appearance on The Howard Stern Show this week she performed an emotional rendition of Tom Petty’s “Wildflowers” and revisited her soaring anthem “Wrecking Ball” and an acoustic version of “Party in the U.S.A.”
It is a confusing decision considering that her latest album is not selling as strongly as expected and is even more disappointing since she has no plans to tour this year. Despite the news of poor sales, Miley remains confident about her release. “I fucking hate the charts, who are you to tell me if my music is good or bad,” she asked the shock-jock. Regardless of the public’s perception, it is clear that she’s just being Miley.
