Neon Wigs & Puppets: Nicki Minaj Drops Her “Barbie Dreams” Video

Nicki Minaj knows how to turn any situation to her advantage. Over the weekend the “Chun-Li” rapper made headlines after being involved in a confrontation with Cardi B. The up-and-comer tried to start a fight at a New York Fashion Week event and then proceeded to claim Nic had bad-mouthed her mothering skills. However, the narrative changed when the rap icon took to her Queen Radio show yesterday (September 10). She escalated the beef by claiming Cardi’s career was built off “sympathy and payola” and continued to shade her throughout the show. Building off the ensuing headlines, she capped off the evening by dropping a video for her current single “Barbie Dreams.”

The anthem emerged as a controversial highlight off last month’s Queen. Interpolating the beat from The Notorious B.I.G.’s “Just Playing (Dreams),” it sees Nicki playfully drag a list of male rappers including frequent collaborators like Drake and Eminem. The track made a strong debut on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking within the Top 20. And it should experience a resurgence with the release of its accompanying video. In it, the hitmaker puts on her best neon wigs and serves some fierce looks alongside a crew of puppets. The end result is simple but striking. And it is clearly paying off. In just over 15 hours, her latest has been viewed more than 3.5 million times.

With a couple promotional performances, I wouldn’t be surprised if Nicki lands the second Top 10 hit of the era. Check out the video up top and revisit her visually stunning “Ganga Burn” visual below!
