Another day, another (overblown) drama. Charli XCX hopped online to explain comments she made in an interview with Pitchfork. Out today (August 6), the feature covers a wide range of topics centered around the 27-year-old’s forthcoming album. However, some Swifties did not take kindly to discussion about her role opening for Taylor Swift’s Reputation Stadium Tour. “I’m really grateful that [Taylor] asked me on that tour,” she said. “But as an artist, it kind of felt like I was getting up on stage and waving to 5-year-olds.”

The anecdote served a purpose to the story. It led to Charli explaining she didn’t want to perform as an opening act anymore – a fair point. “I’ve done so much of it, and it really cemented my status as this underdog character, which I like now,” the “Gone” diva said. “But I need to just own my own fucking shit finally.” She’ll do just that on The Charli LIVE World Tour. But some of Taylor’s fans were not exactly thrilled by the sentiment. They turned to Twitter to voice their displeasure, leading to Charli feeling the need to clear the air.

“I want to clarify there is absolutely no shade and only love here,” she wrote in a lengthy post. “I am extremely grateful to Taylor for inviting me to open for her. She’s one of the biggest artists of my generation and the reputation tour was one of the biggest tours in history.” The pop-saving angel had more to say. “Leading up to that tour I’d been playing a tonne of 18+ club shows and so to be on stage in front of all ages was new to me and made me approach my performances with a whole new kind of energy,” Charli wrote.

“More so I talked about how it was brilliant opening for Taylor, I am extremely grateful for the opportunity I was given and how much fun it was to perform to a new audience.” My verdict: Everyone needs to take some advice from Taylor and calm down. Check out the rest of Charli’s response below and let me know if you agree.
