Heartbreak & Pop Bops: Stream Noah Cyrus’ ‘Good Cry’ EP In Full
September has not been kind to Noah Cyrus. The 18-year-old suffered through a public breakup with her boyfriend and collaborator Lil Xan during which she was accused of cheating. According to her all she did was share a nude Charlie Puth meme (yes, really). The “Team” siren revisited the heartbreak in the duo’s “Live Or Die” video, which quietly surfaced online earlier this week. All things considered, it makes sense that she’d be selling bottles of her tears for the whopping price of $12,000. She’s surely got enough of them to go around. However, she channeled the pain into her appropriately titled Good Cry EP, which arrived today (September 21).
The prolific hitmaker has dropped a bevy of impressive bops since unleashing “Make Me (Cry)” in 2016. However, instead of tossing them together onto the tracklist, Noah filled out Good Cry with five new songs. The only one we have heard before is her recently released Gallant collab, “Mad At You.” On it, she tries to protect her heart from a lover. “It’s gonna be hard as hell. And baby, you know me well. No matter what you do, I can never be mad at you,” she belts over the sparse production. The remainder of the collection is equally fraught with emotion.
Opener “Where Have You Been?” is a haunting ode to a former lover. “Wherever you sleep, I’m in your dreams,” she admits. Meanwhile, the teary songstress lets it all out on the title track. Over a deceptively uplifting production, Noah chases away her heartache by any means necessary. “Hopeless, feeling so hopeless. Honey, I drink ’til I’m sick,” she laments. “The blues got me bad. Oh, I just need a good cry,” she adds. “Punches” emerges as one of the EP’s absolute highlights.
A collaboration with LP, it offers a more optimistic spin on the struggles of a relationship. “You might say I’m wasted on you. But when you break, I break for you too. Love can beat us black and blue. But darling, I’ll take the punches for you,” they resiliently coo. The end result is a stunning torch song that proves sometimes it is worth soldiering through a battle. On “Sadness,” the only relationship Noah cares about is the one between her and her blue emotions. The striding mid-tempo shows off her evocative runs to full effect.
Like any good breakup album, Good Cry closes out with an aching ballad. In this case, the honor goes to “Topanga (Voice Memo).” Over plucky strings, the hitmaker mourns for all that she lost in the mix. “I don’t drive Topanga ’cause it reminds me of you,” she sings. The raw quality of the track imbues it with even more emotion, and she has rarely sounded more similar to Miley than she does here. It is a strong offering from the rising star. And she’ll be able to play it live once she hits the road on The Good Cry Tour. Kicking off tomorrow in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, the diva will play a string of dates across North America before closing the show in Portland, Oregon October 24.
