“Piece Of Me” will always be an important song in Britney Spears’ discography. The ice-cold, paparazzi kiss-off landed on 2007’s Blackout and was released as its second single. Produced by Bloodshy & Avant, it peaked within the Top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100. The accompanying video netted B her first wins at the VMAs (justice for so many videos that got overlooked). But the story doesn’t end there. The title remained relevant into the launch of her first Vegas residency and last world tour. And this week, fans got to hear it like never before when a demo performed by Robyn leaked.

Although the “Honey” pop savior wasn’t involved with writing the song, she does provide backing vocals on the final track. However, this is the first time we’ve heard the entirety of it performed by her. As demos go, this one is a very by-the-books interpretation. Robyn dutifully works her way through the official lyrics, which include several direct references to Britney’s life in the public eye. If anything, her voice feels even chillier over the electronic beats. Not in a bad way; she just seems to be existing above the media furor. It’s an interesting take and more proof that the final is excellent.

Britney’s recording has a bit more life to it, which makes plenty of sense. It was a song written about her, after all. That being said, this offers a look into the creation of one of her enduring classics. Check out Robyn’s take below.
