Selena Gomez Covers ‘Elle,’ Opens Up About New Album & Demi Lovato
Selena Gomez graced the latest edition of Elle with a fashionable shoot. Shot by Mariano Vivanco, the 26-year-old is an absolute vision on the cover. Posing in a blue jacket and with her hair down, she serves a fierce look. The remaining photos from the spread are equally glamorous. In them, she rocks a series of chic gowns in an outdoor setting. Speaking with Mickey Rapkin in an accompanying interview, the “Back To You” diva dropped some important news. In particular, she shared some details about her album and opened up about her response to Demi Lovato’s overdose.
The interview took place six days after Lovato’s alleged overdose as photos of an upset-looking Gomez circulated the web. With their roots in Disney and on Barney, the pair were childhood friends. Selena commented on the news and revealed that she reached out to share her support while Demi was still in the hospital. “All I’m saying is, I reached out personally. I didn’t do a public thing. I didn’t want to. I…I love her. I’ve known her since I was seven. So…it’s…that’s what I’ll say.”
She shared even more details about her forthcoming album, which is rumored to drop as early as this fall. Describing the sound as funky and departure from her earlier work, she played two samples during her interview. The first drew comparisons to Prince and is said to feature a “thumping bass line.” Singing about ending things with a man after “1,460 days,” she attempts to purge her memories on the hook, which “goes something like this: ‘I’m drunk and I might as well tell you, Get you ooh ooh ooh out of my head now.'”
A second track seemed equally emotional. “Were my ambitions too high?” Sel ponders, later adding “Baby, you’re so distant. Why don’t you recognize I’m so rare?” The hitmaker also spoke about a track called “Flawless,” which sounds like an inspirational, autobiographical track. She opened up about what it meant to her – “Meaning through all your imperfections, you’re flawless. You’re not striving. It’s me encouraging a younger version of myself. Even when you’re imperfect, even when you’re feeling worthless, you are flawless. It’s a song I’m going to sing for the rest of my life.”
The hitmaker also opened up about taking some steps back from the hustle of Los Angeles, relocating to Orange County, volunteering for A21, a global anti–human-trafficking nonprofit, and her current frame of mind. “Right now,” she explained, “I feel very sure of where I am. I don’t feel erratic or emotionally unstable. Or like I can’t handle my emotions, like I used to. It’s kind of understanding myself a little more. By all means I don’t have myself figured out. But it feels good.” Taking to Instagram she shared an even more personal message with her fans.
“Speaking from my heart for over an hour to someone who puts those thoughts into paid words can be hard for me,” she explained in a heartfelt note. “So I’ll post some of MY photos from the collection [with Coach] and work with A21. My heart.” Scroll through a gallery of pictures from the shoot up top, read the rest of the feature here and check out the additional photos she posted below!
