Stephanie Mills Shades Sam Smith After Perceived Michael Jackson Diss
Welcome to the strangest beef of 2018. Sam Smith has come under fire from veteran R&B singer Stephanie Mills for saying he doesn’t like Michael Jackson in an Instagram video. (The Brit casually dropped the comment while on a boat with Adam Lambert). That didn’t sit well with Stephanie, who briefly dated MJ in the ’80s. “Don’t come for MICHAEL JACKSON when you wish you have sold as many records and you wish you were the King of Pop like he was,” she wrote in a heated Instagram post.
“I’m so tired of you people studying our music, and studying our artist and claiming that you don’t like our music,” the “Never Knew Love Like This Before” singer continued, referring to white artists appropriating black culture. “Go sit your 1 HIT WONDER ass down and learn how to finish a tour. When you can sell as many records as the king of Pop, Michael Jackson then maybe you can say something. So I say to you Mr. Smith have several seats and come for me if you want to.” This seems like an extreme reaction to someone expressing a musical preference, but Sam could have kept his mouth shut.
