Last night’s Emmy telecast was punctuated by an interlude where the Oprah-approved crooner Josh Groban ran through a medley of classic television themes; during the four-minute performance, he managed to channel Les Claypool, Will Smith during his Fresh Prince phase, and the lead singer of the dancehall act Inner Circle. Also he used a lot (a lot!) of vibrato in weird places. (I guess moms like that sort of thing?) But even more importantly, there were some curious omissions from the medley, which I’ve taken the liberty to list below.

Glued to Our XBoxes: Hot 100 Sleeps While “Guitar Hero” Tracks Sell

gh3.pngEd. note: Chris “dennisobell” Molanphy, our resident chart guru, looks at the upward, downward, and lack of movement on the Billboard Hot 100 in the latest installment of “100 And Single”:

“[A]s I type, playlists are returning to normal, and that plus the inevitable comedown in digital sales will make next week’s chart rather topsy-turvy.” So said I, with hope in my heart, last week in this space.

What the hell was I thinking?! One week later, Billboard‘s Hot 100 couldn’t be any snoozier, with a virtually static Top 10 and only marginal movement farther down the chart. Chalk it up to early-winter doldrums, distraction from the presidential primaries, or some kind of Jedi mind-trick Flo Rida’s “Low” is performing on this great nation’s populace, but right now, it feels like no one’s buying or listening to any new music. Or maybe folks are just too busy playing with their little plastic guitars…

Watch Out, ‘Cause Here Come The Chipmunks (And They’re Covering Daniel Powter)

chipmunks-poster.jpgIn this week’s Who Charted, I noted that the Alvin & The Chipmunks soundtrack had taken up residence in the album chart’s top 20, which prompted this comment from our in-house chart guru Chris Molanphy: “I chose to ignore this in last week’s “100 and Single” column, but contrary to my prediction of a couple of weeks ago, not only is “The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don’t Be Late)” not gone yet, but three other Chipmunks songs debuted on the Hot 100 last week, including their cover of Daniel Powter’s “Bad Day.” Imagine, if you can, the existence of people who went out of their way to download the Chipmunks version of that song.” It’s actually even more frightening to imagine those peoples’ existence when you’ve heard the Chipmunks’ take on the track, so… here you go!
