amerieThis nugget was buried at the bottom of a Billboard piece on this summer’s many delayed albums: “Singer Amerie’s long-awaited return, “In Love & War,” which originally was scheduled for an Aug. 11 release, will be available Sept. 8.” Oh… jeez… getting… flashbacks… Def Jam, take me away! Or at least release some cover art, so I can keep hope alive. [Reuters] More »

Amerie Is Once Again Ready To Take Flight

various_artists_the_future_of_rnb_27-frontThe always-crucial The Future Of R & B mixtape series from Tapemasters Inc. has a new installment out (it’s No. 27, in case you’re counting), and this time out the proceedings are hosted by Amerie, whose Def Jam debut In Love And War is allegedly coming out soon. Sure, fans of the R & B singer have been burned before on the matter of Amerie albums prefaced by mixtapes, but at least she’s tiding us over with a new track. “Red Eye,” after the jump, is rich in airplane-related metaphors, which may explain why its overall feel is silky-smooth. (After all, who wants thoughts of turbulence to interrupt their pleasure trips?) More »

A Very Special Mix CD: Ten Songs That Kelly Clarkson Should Listen To That Aren’t “Pork & Beans”

91028_music-video-kelly-clarkson-i-do-not-hook-upKelly Clarkson had her turn in the New York Times‘ “Playlist” chair yesterday, and the results were, well, mixed. Weezer’s red album got a shoutout, as did the Irish band The Script, who Clarkson described as–eek!–“OneRepublic meets rap.” Kelly, Kelly, Kelly. Aw, Kelly. Listen. In honor of you being my favorite American Idol (and having one of my favorite albums of the year) (well, except for all those songs by the OneRepublic guy, which are just plodding and terrible and tuneless and ugh), I decided to craft a mix CD for you. Because girl, there is there is so much music out there that you would love–and that would probably love you back! More »

Amerie Brings The Mic Close, Her Listeners Closer

Amerie’s video for “Why R U,” which is the first single off what I guess is going to try and be her comeback album In Love & War, is a pretty standard affair: Amerie stands and lounges in front of various walls while miming the track, flaunting her legs to maximum effect. I’m hoping that Def Jam’s attempt to remarket Amerie after the fizzling of Because I Love It works on both a commercial level and an appealing-to-me level. And it’s probably a good sign that “Why R U” has grown on me a lot since its release last month–although I’d be remiss if I didn’t say that feeling was in large part to it being included on the better-with-every-spin ziptape The Future Of R & B: Volume 26, which you should definitely snag if you haven’t already. 30bfb5fAttention fans of R & B: The latest entry in Tapemasters’ The Future Of R & B ziptape series has made its way online, and it looks to be a doozy, with a Ne-Yo/Brandy collaboration, Amerie’s new single, Maxwell’s outstanding “Pretty Wings,” and a track by the all-over-the-Internet Drake in the mix. (This blog has links to other entries in the series as well, in case you missed a few volumes like I did over the past few months.) [The Piff] More »

Amerie Returns, With A Lot Of Questions

amerieThe title of Amerie’s first album on Def Jam has been changed from Breakups To Makeups to In Love And War, and the first single is the pleading ballad “Why R U,” on which Amerie struggles through her feelings for a dude who’s not all that nice, when all is said and done. To these ears, it sounds like a slightly reworked take on her mixtape-only ballad “Get Gone,” which didn’t appear on Amerie’s ill-fated final album for Columbia, Because I Love It; it’s got a smooth early-’90s R & B feel, and it’s certainly made me curious about what the rest of the album–which is being produced by LA Reid, in part–will sound like. Amerie Signs To Def Jam, Will Maybe Get To Release An Album

Rebounding from rumors of being dropped by Columbia after the blog love for her last album, Because I Love It, failed to inspire the label to release it Stateside, Amerie has signed to Def Jam and is already hard at work on her first album for the label, Ironically, I wouldn’t be surprised if Sony finally releases Because I Love It (at least on iTunes) if Def Jam succeeds in making Amerie an across-the-board. After all, it’s bound to be referenced in every article.
