Poor Colbie Caillat

colbieIt’s never a good sign when you get paired with one of the least funny comedians out of a pretty unfortunate Saturday Night Live ensemble for your “humorous” music video. And yet here’s Colbie Caillat, who I guess is trying to make a thing out of palling around with comic types for her new album’s promotional cycle, playing all flirtatious with SNL‘s perpetual manchild Bobby Moynihan in the video for her perky new single “Fallin’ For You.” As far as “dorky guys and cute singer-songwriter types” pairings go, this definitely ain’t Fiona Apple and Zach Galifanakis. Even though it’s pretty obviously trying to be! Clip after the jump. More »

A Plea To Record Labels: When Will The Deluxe Editions Stop?

Universal Music, friend of the consumer, announced a deluxe edition of Colbie Caillat’s debut Coco today; eight additional tracks will be tacked on this new version of the album, which was originally released in July 2007. These “expanded” or “reloaded” or “deluxe” editon discs have been going on for awhile now, and it’s really time for the labels to stop it, or possibly for people everywhere to just stop buying new releases until they’re absolutely sure they’re getting the final, finished product.

Your Half-Year in Adult Contemporary Report: Nostalgia For 2007 Is Already Kicking In

cccccolbie.jpgMost of our readership probably wouldn’t claim that they prefer the smooth sounds of adult contemporary to other genres of music. But when life is a little rough and the mood is more white wine than Jagermeister, even the toughest mosh-pit veteran might tune in to the local Lite station. As a counterpoint to Al Shipley’s excellent recap of the year so far in rock radio, we present the five most-played songs on Adult Contemporary radio in 2008.

Jingle Ball 2007: BJs For The JBs

78496986.jpgOur headline was actually one out of the several hundred text messages that scrolled across a video ticker high above the stage at Madison Square Garden on Friday night, when a sold-out crowd of tweens and teens (and Idolator) took in the pop chart mish-mash of New York radio station Z100’s annual Jingle Ball, and the junior high horndogs who sent in that text weren’t talking about James Brown’s sidemen, but the Jonas Brothers, the pre-fab pop-punk puppy dogs fresh off a leg of the Hannah Montana tour. All night, the mere mention of the Brothers’ names prompted screams so loud you’d think the arena had spontaneously popped a collective cherry, and for four hours, hundreds of exclamation point-riddled messages pledged love to one Brother or another, though usually more along the lines of a chaste hug than fellatio. And taken against the rest of the evening’s performances, America’s squealing affection towards Disney’s latest attempt to bail out the industry (for at least another 12 months) wasn’t necessarily misplaced.

avrillllscience.jpgTonight, Maura and I will be at Madison Square Garden for New York pop station Z100’s annual Jingle Ball, taking in the cream of Billboard‘s crop: Fall Out Boy! Alicia Keys! Avril Lavigne! The Jonas Brothers! Jordin Sparks! Colbie Caillat! Backstreet Boys! Boys Like Girls! Timbaland! With OneRepublic! And Keri Hilson! Is pop music really dead? Probably, but we’ll find out for sure tonight. As a friend put it, it’s going to be awfsome! But which iTunes bestseller is going to put on the most awfsome performance tonight? For the answer to that, we turn to the crystal ball of our handy poll software.

Colbie Caillat Is Pretty Bummed About Universal’s New MySpace Policy (But She Still Loves Her Label OK!)

cccccolbie.jpgAfter causing quite a stir earlier in the week when she announced that songs on her MySpace page would be truncated to 90 seconds because of a corporate edict by Universal Music Group, Colbie Caillat has taken to the social-networking site’s bulletin section once again, because she just wants everyone to know that MySpace is like the most totally awesome thing to happen to her career since she became the daughter of a pretty famous rock producer:

Good news, everybody–it’s time for another “women in rock” festival! Yaaaay! And just to show you how much we haven’t progressed since Lilith Fair hit the road in 1997, we’ll just tell you the performers at this year’s inaugural GirlFrenzy (seriously) Festival by their rank on that Allegedly Hot… More »

Welcome to All Up In MySpace, where we look at bands in the upper echelons of the buggy social-networking site’s unsigned bands chart. Today, we look at a young Los Angeles singer who, perhaps unhealthily, garners creative inspiration from bottling up her emotions. More »
