Is Duran Duran’s “Rio” Really The Greatest Video Of All Time?

Probably not, but that hasn’t stopped the viewers of MTV UK to crown it as such, ahead of promotional reels by the likes of Michael Jackson, Madonna, and OK Go. Sure, it’s all the result of an online poll, and one could argue that the clip is probably one of the most important videos of the (seemingly waning) music-video era, with its quick-for-its-time cuts and glossy preening, but the best ever? Really? This result is kind of making me wonder just how bloody an online battle royale between Durannies and fans of the Jonas Brothers would get. Anyway, for those of you who want to see what “Rio” beat out in the minds of MTV UK’s visitors, the full top 10 (with embeds! because I care!) after the jump.

Nicole Scherzinger Sings National Anthem, Avoids Adding Line About Her Genitalia

Nicole Scherzinger’s 45-slowed-down-to-33 performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” not only features her wearing an outfit that covers her midriff (perhaps that’s the cause for the boos at the outset?), it’s pretty straight-and-narrow–not to mention relatively in key for an a capella performance. But surely I can’t be the only one who thinks that this is step one in her efforts to Kristy Lee Cook it up in a final, last-ditch effort to save her solo album from eternal label purgatory? I can’t wait until she wears a red, white, and blue jumpsuit for the Macy’s July 4 fireworks display and mashes her way through “God Bless The USA,” complete with a posse of Statue of Liberty-dressed Pussycat Dolls behind her. After all, nothing can be worse than her Duran Duran cover, right?

Are Duran Duran “Officially Cool At Last”?

AP071118027565.jpgWhen were Duran Duran cool? Circa Rio? Seven And The Ragged Tiger? Perfect Teeth? Donnie Darko? Reuters suggests that appreciative remarks from bands like the Killers have made the group “officially cool at last.” In 2008. So that’s what it takes to be cool? A tip of the hat from Brandon Flowers? Did “Tranquilize” make Lou Reed more cool? Or is Lou Reed so much cooler than the Killers or Duran Duran that working with the Killers made Lou less cool. And where does Timbaland fit into all this? Or, for that matter, the Dandy Warhols?

Duran Duran: Dressing Like Kraftwerk, Bantering Like Late-Period Spinal Tap

Duran Duran opened its latest world tour at Auckland’s Vector Arena last night, and according to reports, things didn’t go all that well. Not only did Simon LeBon forget the words to “Hungry Like The Wolf,” the mid-show “electro set” where the band reportedly wore matching jumpsuits, Kraftwerk-style, was so plagued with technical difficulties that at one point the band was “standing in front of their synthesizers like confused cashiers in a supermarket,” according to Stuff; photos of the band’s outfits haven’t cropped up anywhere online, although John Taylor looks a bit Edward Scissorhandsy here. Taylor also reportedly walked offstage as a protest against the set, saying, “I could not dance to that. These people came here to dance.” A theory that would be borne out by the way the audience–which every writeup noted was mostly made up of 30something women, all of whom had probably referred to themselves as “Durannies” at one point in their life–forgot the words to one of the band’s biggest MTV-era hits en masse!

Hey, DMS of The Leak Source! It’s nice to be proud of your work, but I’m going to hazard a guess that proclaiming, over and over again, that you’re responsible for ripping the new Duran Duran album and uploading it to Demonoid isn’t the best course of action in these lawsuit-happy times. More »
