The Music Slut has an MP3–possibly ripped from MySpace–of Franz Ferdinand covering LCD Soundsystem’s “All My Friends.” The FF track is slated to appear as an LCD B-side next month, and while LCD’s tinkling piano lines make a quick cameo, this version far more Hooky (ha!) More »

lcdpic.jpgTwo months ago, LCD Soundsystem frontman James Murphy posted a message on the DFA Records board, in which he asked fans to send this week’s Sound Of Silver album to the top of the charts. His logic: If the Dreamgirls soundtrack can claim the top spot by selling a mere 60,064, than he could move at least the same amount of Silver copies:

lcd record 1 (the old record) sold a total of 60559 in the US since it was released. meaning, straight up, if everyone who bought the first record bought s.o.s. the week it’s released, then we’re totally #1. i’m sure some people who bought the old record have now moved on to extreme noise or something, but maybe there are enough new people to make up for it!

So how’s that working out for him so far?

murphysbathtime.jpgIt’s a registration-required article, alas, but today’s Wall Street Journal looks at the boom in rustic or makeshift music studios:

In the last two weeks, about half of the new albums with featured reviews on Pitchfork, an independent-music Web site, were recorded either in makeshift studios or professional ones in pastoral settings. Arcade Fire bought an old church outside Montreal to record last week’s “Neon Bible,” which has since sold 92,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Brit-rock band the Kaiser Chiefs recorded their second album, “Yours Truly, Angry Mob,” which comes out March 27, at a country manor in Berkshire, England. (Rustic is relative: The manor includes a professional studio and advertises its gym and heated pool.)

lcd_soundsystem.jpgA few weeks ago, stubbly LCD Soundsystem mastermind James Murphy began posting on the Guardian‘s music blog, an outlet that allows him to speak out on such topics as the plight of being a too-frequent flyer and the joys of ultimate fighting. But apparently readers were complaining that Murphy wasn’t writing about music, prompting him to post an explanation so protracted and rambling, it’s like listening to David Foster Wallace and James Woods have a pow-wow after drinking a half-dozen Water Joes.

Yes, it’s a song custom-made for Nike. And yes, it’s longer than a Nick Sylvester Harvard lecture. But you really have to listen to LCD Soundsystem’s “45:33 Nike+ Original Run,” which is so good, we actually bought it off the iTunes store. For reals! More »
