Not only will Nicki Minaj make a special guest appearance on America’s Best Dance Crew this Thursday (May 19), the final contenders will be performing to the Maxim Hot 100 vixen’s hits. The Pink Friday rapper has lent “Check It Out” “Massive Attack” “Moment 4 Life” “Did It On’em” and “My Chick Bad” (which, you may recall, also got the Tabitha and Napoleon treatment on Season 7 of SYTYCD) to the IaMmE, ICONIc Boyz, Phunk Phenomenon and Street Kingdom dance crews. What, no “Super Bass”, Nicki?! Check out highlights of the fashionista raptress and Lil’ Mama from the ABDC set. [Rap-Up] More »

Taylor Swift Is Sick Of Talking About The Video Music Awards, But Lil Mama Sure Isn’t

90713084-500x3441Unsurprisingly, the news cycle of Kanye West’s interruption of Taylor Swift at the 2009 Video Music Awards stretched into a second week, with some morning-radio DJ pressing and pressing the issue during an interview with Swift while she primly asked him to please talk about something, anything else. He, being of the clueless mook ilk, refused, so finally, instead of letting him finish—during which the DJ was apparently going to ask Swift for a psychological evaluation of the design-conscious MC—she basically handed the phone to her publicist and said “you deal with him, because I sure don’t want to anymore.” This is the same young lady who everyone felt needed rescuing a scant eight days ago? Seems like she has at least some moxie. Clip after the jump. More »

MTV Host Gives MTV News “Exclusive” Scoop On Her Actions At MTV Video Music Awards

lilmamaMeanwhile, the post-Video Music Awards mea culpas continued with pint-sized MC Lil Mama’s statement on her joining Jay-Z and Alicia Keys onstage at the end of Sunday night’s show, which honestly might have been more notable for how many people said “really? huh, I missed that” in its aftermath than for anything that actually happened. “I did not mean any disrespect towards Jay-Z or Alicia Keys,” she said in a statement released to MTV. (Who, by the way, employ her as host of their dance-off show America’s Best Dance Crew.) “I admire them and look up to them as role models. ‘Empire State of Mind’ had my emotions running high. In that moment I came up onstage to celebrate my two icons singing about NY.” Somehow, she didn’t manage to mention that her latest song—which leaked, OMG, yesterday!—is out. And funnily enough for someone who tried to engage in a little spotlight-stealing, it’s called “See Me Everywhere”! I mean, what are the odds? More »

Lil Mama’s Run-In: The Stage Crash That Didn’t Make Anyone Forget About Kanye

lilmamaHey, did you hear about that hip-hop artist who showed up on stage unannounced at last night’s VMAs? No, not Kanye West, the other one. Lip-gloss aficionado/MTV dance competition judge Lil Mama also made herself an unwelcome presence on the Video Music Awards’ stage, joining Jay-Z and Alicia Keys as they closed out the show with “Empire State Of Mind.” As the song ended, she got up on stage and, after fruitlessly trying to get Jay’s attention, just sort of stood there. Video after the jump, at around the five-minute mark. More »

Five Upcoming Album Titles That Should Be Seriously Rethought

mariah-carey-memoirs-of-an-imperfect-angel-album-cover-photoTitling an album is tough, especially in the era of people being averse to giving a hoot about new music. How do you sum up your artistic intentions in a few words that will look good on a five-inch-square piece of cardboard jammed into a big-box retailer’s rackspace? Unfortunately, some artists have been tripped up by the process so badly that we had to step in and gently tell them that they may not be rocking such a great look, word-wise. After the jump, five examples of really bad album titles that are on the way to a music retailer near you. (NB: Mew’s No More Stories Are Told Today I’m Sorry They Washed Away No More Stories the World Is Grey I’m Tired Let’s Wash Away gets a pass today, because their set at the Pitchfork Music Festival last night was absolute bliss.) Lil Mama… Turns Into Britney Spears?

The debut album by Lil Mama, VYP: Voice Of The Young People, was beset by delays and the general malaise surrounding the record industry and the general lack of pop-cultural space for female MCs (not to mention a really bad title), and so it, to put it politely, underperformed. Which was too bad, because it wound up being a pretty decent hip-pop record with more than a few potential singles. The pint-sized MC’s second album is apparently coming out sometime soon, and the first single to leak, “I’m A Diva,” isn’t her attempt to wrestle with Beyoncé’s Bangladesh-provided beat, but rather a Bloodshy and Avant-produced piece of credit bubblegum that waxes rhapsodic about Lil Mama’s ability to roll around in designer labels and has maybe half a rap verse, during which her rapidfire flow is slowed way, way down. The beat sounds kind of familiar, too!

Teen Choice Awards Pick A Couple Of Age-Appropriate Winners For Once

AP080803017443.jpgAs opposed to last year, when the Teen Choice Awards spread the wealth among a bunch of olds (Fergie, Timbaland), this year’s slate of music-related winners was highly concentrated. By which I mean that if a nominee in one of the Fox-produced event’s music categories wasn’t associated with the Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus, or Chris Brown, it didn’t stand a chance of emerging from the evening with a surfboard. (But hey, at least this resulted in good news for Lil Mama.) Music winners after the jump.

Ice-T Hated Soulja Boy Well Before Their YouTube Beef

AP060330010533.jpgGrandpa Ice-T and young Soulja Boy may have quashed their beef, but a clip of Ice-T bitching about Soulja last October (“Soulja Boy? The fuck is that? It’s garbage! And if the dude doesn’t like it, I’ll punch him in his face.”) that recently popped up on YouTube just may reignite it. Not only does it add a violent threat to the mix, it also casts serious doubt on Ice-T’s claims that he was being goaded into dissing Soulja Boy on the mixtape that started it all. Even if Soulja ignores this cane shaking, Lil’ Mama (“‘My lip gloss be popping?’ Get the fuck out of here.”) and Mims (“We came all the way from Rakim to ‘This Is Why I’m Hot’…) may step up to the star of Surviving The Game with some sequel beef.
