Happy birthday to Morrissey, who turns turned 49 today yesterday. To celebrate, we could go the easy route and throw some Smiths videos together, or even some of the highlights of his solo career. But what would Morrissey want for his birthday? What would make him happiest, and properly thank him for all the (emotional) misery and (musical) joy he’s provided over the years?
In honor of Madonna’s “highly sexed up” cover for Hard Candy, Gigwise put up a list of 50 album covers they consider the “dirtiest and sexiest” ever. Unsurprisingly, naked women outnumber naked men by a rather large margin. But with rare exception, the appearance of a naked man is used as comedy. What, no shirtless Jim Morrison? No I’m In You? Check out what passes for beefcake with these guys (NSFW!!).
You can take semi-literate gossip site TMZ’s latest “‘Memba Him?,” which is about the former lead singer of popular “alternative/emo/indie” band the Smiths, in one of two ways: One, TMZ assumes that its readership is so Idiocratic that it’s only able to identify members of the axis of celebrities… More »
Morrissey will perform at the Heatwave Festival in Tel Aviv on July 29. Last January, Morrissey was rumored to be planning a tour throughout the Middle East, including stops in Tehran and Beirut, but this is the only date in the region to be announced so far. After the jump is a lovely clip of Morrissey announcing the engagement and blowing kisses with “Israel” written in Hebrew on his arm.
Morrissey won a court apology from Word Magazine for suggesting that the author of “Asian Rut” was a racist and a hypocrite. His case against the NME’s similar accusations is still pending. More »
Fans thought that Los Angeles pop group Sparks had some sort of issue with The Last of the International Playboys, what with “Lighten Up, Morrissey” being a song title on the group’s forthcoming album, Exotic Creatures Of The Deep. More »
Just about anything if this kinda amazing story by Andrew Winters is anything to go by. Winters applied to become “assistant road manager” for Morrissey’s 2007 U.S. tour, and he quickly discovered the promise of “the most unusual gig [he would] ever experience” was quite the understatement, proving no match for Morrissey’s legendarily inscrutable and mercurial moods and sent home to the U.K. after just a day. Why? Maybe it was Winters’ meek approval of Henry Rollins’ radio show? His carnivorous nature? Or that fact that Moz is, you know, nuts?

Well, the NME learned a valuable lesson this week: Never corner Morrissey, because he’ll put you on blast with a volubility that shames just about anyone you currently have on staff. Responding to the accusation that statements he made during a recent interview were racist and in addition to the lawsuit he’s reportedly bringing against the tabloid, Morrissey has penned a withering 1,800-word NME take down for The Guardian that’s mostly designed to clear his name, but also turns out to be one of the more eloquent summations of the rag’s post-’90s/Britpop irrelevance.
