Of Montreal’s T-Mobile Ad: Cell Phone Companies Now Pandering To The Blog Demo

When Of Montreal’s ad for T-Mobile came on during last night’s American Music Awards, my initial reaction was along the lines of, “What music-blogger hell did this crawl out of?” And it still stands. I mean, reunion-show jokes? Band meetings that are conducted in fancy-ass hotel rooms while Kevin Barnes and Co. are in full stage makeup? I’m going to hazard a guess that most of the Daughtry fans watching the show didn’t realize that Of Montreal is, you know, an actual working band with records out, especially with the feather-flying celebration at the ad’s end.

Of Montreal Flips The Script And, Apparently, Its Lid

ofmontreal.jpgThe Southern music blog Cable & Tweed has a bunch of information on Of Montreal’s stint as a traveling karaoke machine–they opened their karaoke mini-tour in Athens the other night, and the MP3s that have been posted from that evening reveal that the band does a cracking version of INXS’ “Need You Tonight.” But what caught our eye was a description of the band’s newest bit of merch:

Tonight at the show they had an odd item at the merch booth. They were free for the taking, and they were labeled fo [FAUX] Montreal – The Bedtime Drama: A Petite Las Vegas Tragedy. The cover has a picture of a shirtless Kevin Barnes, a ring of penises (Kevin’s, apparently), an inset of the band, and a Bloomin’ Onion from Outback Steakhouse.
