Last night’s star turn by Paula Abdul as the host of Vh1 Divas was full of bad references to Abdul’s recent American Idol past, including an extended turn in which Abdul donned a blond wig and used her dancing skills to mock the way her Idol replacement Ellen DeGeneres enters on her talk show… only to take back any parodic intent almost immediately after the lengthy aisle-dancing segment was finished. Raise your hand if you saw this coming: The person replacing Paula Abdul on the American Idol judges’ panel will be none other than talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, who according to Hollywood sleuth Nikki Finke has signed a five-year deal with the show that kicks in once the live episodes start next winter. Next month will bring American Idol‘s called-back hopefuls to Los Angeles for the round of auditions that is known among fans of the show as “Hollywood Week,” and given that Paula Abdul is still adamant about not going back to the people who disrespected her, the producers need an extra body to warm the seat next to Simon Cowell. Paula Abdul will return to live-TV splendor on Sept. 17, when she hosts the Vh1 Divas telecast starring Kelly Clarkson, Jordin Sparks, Miley Cyrus, and Leona Lewis. Hmm… two American Idol winners and an X-Factor winner on the roster? I’m just saying, that’s an awful lot of Simon Cowell-related talent for a show hosted by someone who so publicly and tearfully split from his empire. (Also, it’s August. Conspiracy theories are more fun in the oppressive heat!) [Vh1 / Twitter] More »
