A lot went down tonight at the 2010 BET Awards. Drake was “Successful” and took home Best Male Hip-Hop Artist. Te Harajuku Barbie, Nicki Minaj, won Best Female Hip-Hop Artist. A star studded group gathered in Miami studio this Memorial Day Weekend to shoot DJ Khaled’s music video for his “All I Do Is Win” remix. The video, directed by Gil Green (DJ Khaled’s “We Takin’ Over” and Rick Ross’ “Everyday I’m Hustlin'”), included a list of stars so long you might mistake the shoot for a second remake of “We Are The World”. Among those on the remixed track and in attendance: Rick Ross, P. Diddy, Fabolous, Fat Joe, Busta Rhymes, Rich Kid, and Harajuku Barbie Nicki Minaj. Earlier this week, the blonde pop duo Aly & AJ announced that they had changed their name to 78violet. (“Fyi…..u pronounce #78violet as seventy eight violet:),” they helpfully added.) The sisters are calling their renaming “an exciting new beginning,” although given that they’ve already achieved some chart success under their old name, one wonders if this change might hurt their fledgling pop career more than it helps. Big changes are afoot in the Bad Boy universe: the strangely cypher-like singer Cassie has apparently been appointed “first lady” of the label, seemingly pushing aside Faith Evans (where has she been, anyway?). The occasion for said ascent: After countless delays and a head-shaving episode like the one I went through in 11th grade, she has a new single out! “It Must Be Love” a slight bit of R & B that’s delicately wound around a fluttery guitar sample, and it has one “Puff Daddy” filling the obligatory alpha-male role. Yes, those credits do say “Puff Daddy,” which you may remember was the years-ago name of one Sean Combs, the proprietor of Bad Boy who’s gone through aliases like some people go through favorite sweatshirts. What is going on here? Perhaps Mr. Combs is planning on reserving the “Diddy” moniker for his Twitter persona, which has accrued more than half a million followers? Or his adventures with the Arctic Monkeys? Judge for yourself after you hear the track, which is below.
