Vampire Weekend Make A Bodega Run

281x211Riding the wave of being name-checked by Ghostface (alongside Billy Joel and Pink) in yesterday’s New York Times, knitwear-loving New York band Vampire weekend has released the first song from their forthcoming album Contra. (It comes out in January.) “Horchata” is a catchy little bit of fluff that rhymes the titular drink with “Balaclava,” and it certainly won’t stop people from comparing them to Paul Simon at every turn. But that’s OK, because near the end? It erupts into some serious orchestral bliss. It’s available as a free download from their official site; there’s an embed after the jump. More »

vampireweekendA reader in the know let me know that, contrary to Hits‘ assertions, Vampire Weekend’s second album will not be coming out on Sept. 29—in fact, it’s not slated to come out until sometime in 2010. However, what is apparently coming out that day: the Where The Wild Things Are soundtrack featuring Karen O and her pals and a bunch of kids. Tradeoff? [Pause & Play / Earlier] More »

The Five Best Sales Showdowns Taking Place This Fall

whogivesahootThe folks at industry rag Hits have a handy chart of the albums coming out in the last months of the year, which, who knows, may be the last one in which a chart like this is even necessary! But even though we’re a long way from the days of 50 Cent and Kanye West squaring off on the anniversary of 9/11, it’s still sort of fun to see what CDs will be landing at America’s retailers on the same day. After the jump, five of the best battles that could arise from the coming release-date schedule. (Marketing departments, get your beef stew recipes ready!) More »

Alanis Morrissette And Alicia Silverstone Miss The Days When Music Videos Were Only Four Minutes Long

isntitironicTwo icons of the ’90s, Alicia Silverstone and Alanis Morrissette, have teamed up for a cause that affects all of us (especially knowledge-worker types who have extra time on their hands to read blogs): Movies with no discernible purpose other than throwing a bunch of highly bloggable artists on the soundtrack and using those songs to score long stretches of dialogue-free “pondering” about “life.” (Oh, and their cutesy credit sequences give work to animators, I guess.) They teamed up to make a trailer for a movie called MY Mother’s Red Hat (you can already figure out the “plot,” right?), complete with soundtrack almost as long as its script—and Vampire Weekend’s “A-Punk” soundtracking the commercial’s requisite “music crazily stopping to portray a crazy scene in the movie” bit. Clip after the jump. More »

thevwbugsVia e-mail, a confirmation that the Vampire Weekend tribute band we posted about yesterday is a) not a joke perpetuated on the desperate musicians of Craigslist, b) already staffed (with preppies from Princeton!), and c) already in possession of a name (the VW Bugs), a MySpace page, and a Twitter account. No music is on the MySpace page just yet, but someone less charitable than I might argue that said music comes in second to the whole concept in the whole “importance” race. More »

If You Give A Hoot About An Oxford Comma And Look Like Ezra Koenig, Tacos (And Microfame) Could Be Yours

1488469791_lWhat do you need to succeed as a musician in New York City? A little chutzpah, a little ingenuity, and a way to get free sustenance. The budding Lou Pearlman who lives in Williamsburg and wants to create a North Brooklyn boy band of his very own knows this, as evidenced by his Craigslist ad looking for members of a Vampire Weekend tribute outfit. (It’s important to note that dude is not just assembling a cover band, because “you must look vaguely like a member of the band” and have at least one pair of deck shoes in your closet to be considered.) He’s already set up a residency for the band at a “popular” bar in the neighborhood! And decided on a form of payment! The pitch, after the jump. More »

Idolator Live-Blogs The 2008 mtvU Woodies: Yes, For Real

Well, I no longer live in student housing, Rilo Kiley is unfortunately not in the building, and I’ll play the modesty card and argue that I’m not nearly as hilarious as Maura suggests, but yes, here I am again in the mtvU blogging pit (of doom). Oh, it’s not all that bad. The music is really loud and the table is far too high (or maybe it’s the chairs that are too low) to type comfortably, but the staff is very friendly and there are free mini-hamburgers so we’ll call it even.
