This weekend’s Saturday Night Live was another sign that the show’s writers are still trying to figure out how to navigate the post-Sarah Palin landscape, with a sorta-depressing skit about host Zac Efron’s realization that he will never shake the “teen idol” tag placed around his neck by High School Musical being the nominal highlight; there was also a sketch featuring Bon Jovi “opposite band” Jon Bovi that went on so long, I pictured the show’s director waving frantically behind the camera, making gum-stretching gestures at Jason Sudeikis and Will Forte out of fear that the show would end at 12:45. Oh, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs played, too; the trio performed their new single “Zero” (which I really want to hear the Killers’ take on, to be honest; at the very least, Karen O and Brandon Flowers are kindred spirits in shoulder-plumage) and the old chestnut “Maps,” I guess in the hopes that the Zac-loving tweens who tuned in would remember the song from their brothers’ endless Rock Band sessions. Clips after the jump.
Is it Ezra Koenig? Is it Zac Efron? Is it Jay-Z? Is it Lang Lang? Is it Blake Shelton?!? Some publications seem to think so. It’s the end of the year, and that can only mean one thing: lists, lists, and more lists. People Magazine is out with its famed Sexiest Man Alive 2008 list, which manages to stay noteworthy despite the fact that Nick Nolte won the award in 1992. Musically speaking, they gave runners-up to Efron, Lang Lang, and Blake Shelton.

Artists: Lil Wayne/Zac Efron.
Rumor: The two of them are not only collaborating on a High School Musical remix album, they’re totally making out. And Weezy’s rubbed off so much on Zac, the Disney-bred cutie is dropping the N-bomb!
First Mention: The OC Weekly printed “The Efron Scandal,” which made these claims, on Thursday, and author Ben Westhoff tipped us off to the story Friday. But we didn’t run it, because it was pretty freaking obvious that it was a goof. Take this sentence: “‘I’m just being me,’ Wayne insists, leading a tour of his recently purchased oceanfront house, which features a faux-bronze statue of his own nude figure, and a Juicy Fruit-dispensing bathroom attendant who lives on the premises full-time.” I mean, in ninth grade I fell for the old “gullible isn’t in the dictionary” joke and even I realized this was someone having a 675-word laugh.
Friday night’s High School Musical 2 debut attracted 17.24 million viewers, making it the most-watched basic cable telecast ever. Also, having a post that mentioned Zac Efron really buoyed our traffic over the weekend a lot, so in an effort to keep that train rolling: Zac Efron Zac Efron Zac Efron. More »
