Shawn Mendes weathers the elements in his conceptual 'In My Blood' video.

You might remember Teddy Geiger as the teen idol behind 2006 hit “For You I Will” (that whole album is something of a ’00s guitar-pop classic), but a lot has changed since then. For starters, the 29-year-old has become one of the music industry’s most sought-after songwriters and came out as a trans woman in 2017. She is now stepping into the spotlight again with a new single and it’s a delightfully offbeat, rollicking rock song called “I Was In A Cult.”

Given her knack for penning radio-friendly anthems with big hooks and a soaring chorus (see Shawn Mendes’ “Stitches” and “In My Blood”), Teddy would be forgiven for playing it safe. Instead, she rebrands as the edgy alt-rock queen 2018 truly deserves. In an interview with The New York Times, the hitmaker says “I Was In A Cult” is about “acting from a place of freedom” and that really comes through in the lyrics as well as its loose structure and fuzzy production. Get reacquainted with Teddy below.
