Idolator Lets The Genie Out Of Our Brains

Nov 28th, 2007 // 7 Comments

In the history of Idolator editorial decisions based on having some song permanently stuck in your head, this tune is almost as good as when my boss was plagued by Huey Lewis.

Maura couldn’t stop humming Christina Aguilera’s “Genie In A Bottle.” And then of course I couldn’t stop humming “Genie In A Bottle” (and beatboxing the catchy little drum machine fillip that’s still my favorite part of the song). And now we’re passing the fresh-faced ululations on to you. After close to a decade, this “not a girl, not yet a drag queen” era of Xtina’s long strange trip from hi-gloss teenpop to DJ Premier boogie woogie seems so far away.

This and “What Girl Wants” off the same album are surprisingly decent pop songs.

“What *A* Girl Wants”, even …

That’s nothing. Get the Spanish version stuck in your head for an entire summer of mowing lawns, then get back to me.

    “Soy un genie atrapado, bebe…”

This song rules. “Genio Atrapado” is an even guiltier pleasure, and an mp3 I will never lose. It’s made even better by knowing that she doesn’t speak Spanish, and is singing fo-net-ick-lee from a lyric sheet.

@dennisobell: “I Want it That Way” is still the supreme pop song of that shiny pants era, I’d say.

The older I get, the more this song seems a tour de force. I already like it better than “…Baby One More Time,” and it’s creeping up on “I Want It That Way” in my estimation.

The old mash-up of this with the Strokes is kind of like pop crack x100.
