Swedish-Australian sisters Say Lou Lou have earned a healthy amount of hype with their dreamy ambient pop — their tune “Fool Of Me” was on heavy rotation all spring — so it comes as no surprise that their latest effort is equally gorgeous. Covering Australian psych-rock outfit Tame Impala‘s “Feels Like We Only Go Backwards,” they transform the song’s dissonant original into something lush and thoroughly Scandinavian in its pop sensibilities, the chorus now more buoyant and the vocal delivery sweeter.
It wouldn’t be out of place on the Drive soundtrack, nor would it be surprising as a new track from Lana Del Rey.
As the girls themselves explained: “‘Feels Like We Only Go Backwards’ is really enthralling, it’s like there are several different worlds inside one song. How it feels like a simple rock song (with almost pop melodies) but with a field of colour bursts of warm layered instrumentation that re-invents itself throughout the whole song… but it wasn’t until we started making our own version that we discovered how beautiful the lyrics are – another world in itself – so we decided to strip the groove back and take it into another place.” And indeed they did.
