M.I.A. treated fans to an end-of-year Twitter spree on New Year’s Eve, and it culminated with her announcement that she is leaving Jay Z‘s Roc Nation management. The outspoken star didn’t offer an explanation, simply stating, “im leaving @RocNation . Thank to everyone who supported the M.I.A #MATANGI LP. HAPPY NEW YEAR.” However, the rapper’s past year, during which she was with Roc Nation, has been contentious. She previously butted heads with Interscope over Matangi delays and their decision to pull her documentary trailer. Both Interscope and Roc Nation fall under Universal Music Group.

M.I.A.’s announcement was followed by tweets laying out plans to build her own creative team, and she even began soliciting applications: “MIA 4 the people by the people, looking for young people to work in fields of ART production / MUSIC /MERCH / FILM / WEB / MARKETING.” So, if you’re looking for new work in the new year, perhaps you should update that resume and fire it off to Ms. Matangi.
