After the musical bomb that was good kid, m.A.A.d. city, Kendrick Lamar follows up his 2012 debut with a brand new single – simply titled, “i.” The song, produced by Rahki, is the first insight to the rapper’s highly anticipated, yet-to-be-titled sophomore album.

“i” is an inspiring track, where Lamar triumphantly shouts “I love myself” throughout the chorus. The Isley Brothers‘ “That Lady” sample also boosts the song’s groovy nature. “i” definitely doesn’t sound like anything that is on urban radio – there are no trap influences, heavy bass drops or overtly explicit lyrics.

But don’t just take our word for it! Listen to “i” after the jump.

With songs like “m.A.A.d city” and “Backseat Freestyle” in his arsenal, many people were probably expecting a more hardcore sound from the California rapper. “i” is by no means an instant hit, and it will probably be a grower. But with all of the violence and tension occurring throughout America, “i” may just be the song we needed to uplift our spirits.
