A few weeks ago, we heard a preview of Sia‘s cover of The Mamas & The Papas‘ 1965 classic “California Dreamin'” in the trailer for disaster movie San Andreas. At first, it seemed it might be another annoying entry in the “melodramatic, moody version of a famous song for a movie trailer” canon. But the full track sans explosions and dialogue has hit the web, and we’re happy to report it isn’t such a maudlin affair!

The folky, open-field bittersweetness of the original has been blown out with symphonic flourishes and a modern anthemic sheen. Sia’s typically impassioned vocals are just as towering as the string-laden arrangement, giving the whole thing a sense of gravity that doesn’t quite seem to fit with a blockbuster action flick starring The Rock.

Hear it below.

And now the real issue: How does it compare to John Mayer Trio‘s gold standard of overblown “California Dreamin'” covers?
